A Message From New Zealand Fencing:
Tēnā koutou Katoa. Nau Mai Haere Mai
It is with great pleasure and I have to say, also with pride that I, on behalf of the New Zealand and Mid South fencing community, welcome fencers, coaches, referees, officials and supporters to the 2016 Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships.
Four years ago at the same event in Singapore, New Zealand was approached about hosting this tournament in Christchurch. At the time the memories of the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes were still very raw, many of Christchurch’s fencer’s lives were still affected on a daily basis and we had lost a number of fencing venues in the city, but accept the challenge we did.
Four years of planning, a great deal of hard work and Canterbury passion has resulted in us being here today.
Of course the main reason we are all here today is the fencing, but I encourage all of you to get out and enjoy what Christchurch, Canterbury and New Zealand has to offer during your stay with us however long this may be. A number of Christchurch attractions have special offers for CVFC participants which are detailed on the web site and in the event programme.
This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our event partners and I would like to thank them all personally for their support, their details are again detailed on the web site and in the event programme.
Christchurch is well on the way to being a great modern city, better than it was prior to nature’s interruption. It is a very vibrant and exciting place to live and I hope some of this rubs off on all of you and Christchurch will have special memories when you return to your home countries or other parts of New Zealand.
Nearly 200 entries from 10 Commonwealth countries shows we are going to have a great competition, so it just leaves me to say good luck, fence hard but fence fair and enjoy your Christchurch experience.
