Top 10 Cafes for 2015

On 21st October 2015 the annual Zest Food Awards were announced. The following cafes made the top 10 list...
They bring urban chic to the city cafe scene. The ply-on-white decor is soothing and mellow and the coffee is top notch. The whole space is bathed in sun on a warm day. They have a simple breakfast/ brunch menu which you can have with your caffeine hit. If you want a treat then look no further than the lemon meringue pie.
Sister cafe to Black Betty and Industrie. Switch in Brighton was where it all started in 2006. It has vintage vibe with plenty of retro and killer cabinet selection. Switch excels at turning out crispy bacon, just- so eggs and perfect coffee every time. Located in the heart of Brighton it is just a hop, skip and jump to the beach.
Caffeine Laboratory has been through several cycles of change as it morphs to the market of Christchurch. It has a contemporary and creative set of menus with some of the best coffee in town. Word has it that it is here you will find the best porridge in Christchurch and that if you order the chips you won't regret it!
Open from early till late, you can breakfast, brunch, lunch, happy hour or dine. Whether you are a health nut or want to indulge the menu has it covered. The menu changes constantly - fresh produce and market focus! It's chic, on trend and delivers on top cafe quality with a creative edge.
Simplicity rules at Black and White where there's always lounge space on the lawn and the cabinet is stocked with wee cakes. Coffee is the focus here! The menu and cabinet are stocked with food from local start up suppliers as there is little to no space for a kitchen.
If you are looking for service then this is the place to go. Run by the Mitchelli family the place has a welcoming vibe. The food could be described as comfort and included Mama Mitchelli's Muesli and a selection of pastas for lunch.
Cool, calm and collected. It delivers on the hype with a fantastic breakfast menu as well as a counter that is stacked full of home baking. The smoothies are a highlight and scrambled eggs are rated the best in town.
Black Betty has been a champion since it opened in 2011 and for some is like a pair of well worn slippers you just can't do without. Last year saw Black Betty undergo a reno making it bigger and better still. Try a plate of crumpets or anything else from it's brunch/ lunch menu to it's cabinet food or one of it's speciality coffees-finished at the table as part of the experience. (syphon coffee)
Tucked inside a cute wooden building near The Colombo see this tiny cafe open onto a large covered and uncovered courtyard and garden. It brunch style menu and cabinet food take flavour combos to the next level eg: Red Velvet pancakes.
Focused on relaxed comfort, this cafe prides itself on having cheerful, helpful and knowledgeable staff that treat you like a regular whether it is your first time at Dose or a frequent visitor. The menu is to die for! Just two of the items from the menu are... French Toast with raspberry, mascarpone, vanilla custard and streaky bacon or Pulled Pork Bagel. Yum!!!

Dose Diner is the winner of the Zest Cafe of the Year 2015. Also worth visiting are Dose's sister sites- Dose Cafe in Tuam St and Container Sushi in the Re-Start Mall.

You can take a walk through the central city and just pick somewhere to eat that you happen to pass by, though very popular places will require bookings. As our cafes and restaurants are scattered throughout the city and the surrounding area a look at some websites could help you plan ahead so you don't miss out on something you would love to experience while here.
