Special News Release-Monday 14th November Earthquake

posted Nov 13, 2016, 12:45 PM by Leasa Ogilvie

As you will no doubt be aware there was a major earthquake north of Christchurch overnight.

I am pleased to report that everyone here is OK, if a little tired from no sleep and there are no plans to change anything for CVFC 2016.

Christchurch is open for business and this includes the airport, I have also personally visited the venue this morning and it has been checked by engineers and is already open.

The picture is becoming clearer but it seems there is a fair amount of damage north of Christchurch towards Blenheim and tragically it appears two people have lost their lives.

The main highway north to Kaikoura is currently closed.  The lower North Island has also been affected and Wellington is in clean up mode this morning.

At this point in time there is no reported damage to buildings and infrastructure in the Christchurch which will be due in part to the higher building standards introduced post 2011.  It probably results in Christchurch being one of the safest places to be in NZ when these events happen.

So in summary we are not expecting the events overnight to have any impact the plans for CVFC 2016 and we are looking forward to welcoming you all here later this week.
